Actually if the CD ROM is part of a SCSI chain, there is a possibility of
moutning the volume manually. Search download.com for SCSI... I don't
remember the actual name of the utility, but there are programs that will
probe for available SCSI devices on a Mac.

Patrick, the short answer is NO, you can't manually mount a CD on a
Mac. Either one of four things are taking place if the CD icon doesn't
appear when the CD is loaded.
1. The CD is not in MAC format or ISO9660 format.
2. The CD is damaged.
3. The system software is incorrectly installed.
4. The CD is a multi-session CD and your Mac is too old to read it.
