If you check out the Flash Component Kit, you'll see that their solution is
similar. They set the visiblility to hidden on all selects in the document.

This is a little off topic, but has anyone experienced the problem of having
their drop down, or pop-out navigational windows appear "behind" form
elements? For instance I have a multi-tiered pop out navigational menu that
will be displayed behind form elements like the select form element. The
select form element ignores z-indexing. Does anyone have a solution? I
tried to disable the div containing the form elements, but disable did not
work. I also tried hiding the div containing the elements, but it looks
silly having the form disappear and appear as the user mouse over the
navigational structure.
