The short answer is: a bar code is just a font. There are ton's of different bar code fonts. I think 3x9 is most common, but it really depends on what the hardware for reading bar codes wants.
Do a google search on bar codes and you'll get a ton of stuff. We also had a thread on this list about bar codes last fall.
