You're just talking about monitoring online/offline status of people using
your app? I'd check out how web/flash chats handle it. I have one at
http://www.turnkey.to/talkontap -- I use a similar mechanicm in my CMS
application to display the list of currently logged in users (and to fuel
the modified chat-room integrated into the CMS) -- though in that context I
have the advantage of knowing when users leave the application by forcing
the application to log them out if they close the browser or move it to
another location not within the app. In both cases I use the application
scope to store user data, although you could also use the file system
dependant on your situation and future plans. Within the CMS I also use the
database to store user login information -- this makes it much easier to do
certain things like automatically log a user out if their account is
disabled by an administrator in the middle of a session.
