I'll give him the benefit on the formula, it'd take too much thought for me to try & qualify that (lol cameron)
All depends on how many store's you've got, and how "accurate" you're trying to be.
Low fi solution, I'd recommend just stripping off the first 2 characters of the zip & adding up or down as many places as you want, then searching the range. Won't give you mileage data, but if you don't need that, its easier & cheaper (free)
Ex: zip 75202 entered.
strip 202, & search like %75 or like %74 or like %76...
relatively useful tool for getting a textual idea of how zipcodes are laid out here:

i had a zip map of the us, but can't find it.
Like i said, LO LO FI.
on the other hand, as a developer you'll probably get asked for this a lot, so maybe invest in doing it right if you can get the client to pony up a couple hundred... then you can "resell" the "application" you developed time & time again...
plus, you could put it on your personal website, so visitors could track your closest family member to their location.... : )
good luck...
(actually, just read derek's post, sounds like you could use my search & his distance thing to get where you're going, if you don't want to buy the tag/db for 325)

Find the closest store application...
Working on a "find a store near you" type of application.
Anyone have any tips on this sort of thing? Must be a database of the zip codes and how they relate to one another in proximity out there somewhere...
