Shareware - money first or code first?

A bit off topic, but still in the ballpark. What do you think about selling shareware… money first then code, or give the code out and hope for the best via honor system? Does anyone have any experience with which option yields the most money at the end of the day? Looking forward to hearing what everyone has to say!
