Depending on the type of ERD you want to model, there are several tools out there. The first that comes to mind is of course Microsoft Visio, which is what I end up using most often.
I typically do UML ERDs and there are a couple of nice free tools out there for doing this if you don't want to buy Visio. One is called Poseidon.
