I agree with this but I think it should be an occasional thing.
There's always plenty of CF to talk about, and part of what I'd like
to see happen is for us to do enough either general-interest
CF-related topics and some mix of beginner topics so we might be able
to better attract new members or folks who might be new to ColdFusion.
This is part of what I was getting at with some of the survey
questions (results very soon, I promise!). I think if we can start
getting some show-and-tell type presentations or a forum in which
people can ask questions about challenges they're facing it will be a
good mix and maybe appeal to a broader range of people.

Absolutely--I think there's definite value here. I for one wouldn't
like to see the CF group get diluted, however, but mixing things up
would definitely be a good thing.

Here's where I have to disagree--I think there's plenty of CF to talk
about, and we have a pretty broad range of skills in the group and
certainly in our geographic area. I personally would love to see more
people involved with presentations, so if you have pretty deep
knowledge about a particular area of CF and want to talk, please let
me know. Everyone in the group can benefit from deeper knowledge of
things they may only use occasionally or not had a chance to use yet
(e.g. the CF discussion on the list recently), and if the experts in
the group can start spreading their knowledge to beginners or less
experienced people, that's definitely a good situation.

I'm still wrestling with the best way to appeal to the broadest number
of people, but in my mind there's absolutely no shortage of things to
talk about with CF. Beyond the basic language features (tags,
functions, CFCs) and "CF 101"-type presentations around this that some
people might really appreciate, we can get into any number of more
advanced areas of discussion like security, application architecture,
OOP, design patterns, J2EE deployment, interacting with Java and .NET,
CF vs. other technologies, and of course with Blackstone there's a
whole new host of stuff we'll be able to talk about (and that's just
off the top of my head!).

The other new resource we have available to us is Breeze Live, and
this is something that I think would be ideal for occasional joint
meetings with the Flash UG. Patrick (as UG manager) and I (as a Team
MM member) have pretty decent access to a host of folks in the
community all over the world that we could tap to do presentations,
and if it's a broader topic with a bigger audience, it gets even
easier to talk experts outside our immediate geographic area to be
willing to talk.

Lots of avenues to investigate, and as always, if you have thoughts on
any of this either send them to the list or to me directly. I think
we have some really exciting opportunities ahead!
