If the server name resolves correctly and quickly there's no real
reason to use the IP address.  Sometimes in shared hosting situations
when the database is on the same internal network but on a different
server I'll use an internal IP so the traffic doesn't go through DNS
resolution and the public internet just to hit a box that's physically
right next to the web server, but for stuff like LDAP I'd say in
general it's better to use the server name just in case for some
reason the IP changes.

That's my random thought on the issue anyway. ;-)
