Another thing to note about BlueDragon is that it runs great and has a one-click installer for the Mac. I'm hosting some low-traffic sites using the free version of BlueDragon running on a G4 iMac in my house, and it was a piece of cake to set up and get it tied into Apache on the Mac. MySQL even has a nice System Preferences tool you can install on the Mac now--nothing too fancy but it's a quick way to check the status of your MySQL server and start and stop it.

I was interested in this when it came out last year. Looks like the
link to North Lake College is bad. Is this still offered?

Also, the latest CFDJ has an article on building a "LAMBDA" box.
Linux, Apache, MySQL, Blue Dragon (not sure what the last 'A' is for).
The guy put the whole deal on an old laptop. I might try this as an
experiment. It's cheap enough!

If you haven't checked out mysql.com lately, the GUI tools have really improved!

I just wanted to let everyone know that the DCCCD's
only LAMP(Linux-Apache-MySQL-PHP/Perl/Python) program
is now open for enrollment at North Lake College.
This program consists of four 8-week courses
(full-semester courses which are "compressed" to 8
weeks) which provide hands-on instruction in the
following areas:

Linux Installation and Administration (ITSC 1391) -
Hands-on introduction to the Linux operating system
covering aspects of Linux installation,administration,
upgrading, networking, security, and application
development.

Apache Installation and Administration (IMED 1391) -
Learn how to set up, configure, and administer your
own web server. Topics will include Apache
architec-ture, core modules, security, and server
management.

MySQL (ITSC 1391) - This course will prepare students
with the knowledge and tools necessary to install and
maintain a secure and stable MySQL database and will
cover user and database setup, access control, the SQL
language, backups, and security.

PHP (ITSE 1391) - Brush up on your programming skills
(or learn a new skill!) by learning PHP, an
open-source scripting language that forms a critical
com-ponent of Internet technology.

All classes are offered in the evenings, two nights a
week with an additional "open lab" available on
Fri-days. Classes are taught by instructors with years
of experience in various aspects of open-source
techno-logy. And you can't beat the price: $133
tuition for each class offered. Each class is a 3-hour
credit course, and can be transfered into other
program and certificates.

Check out the schedule here:
http://www.northlakecollege.edu/schedules/2005Spring/ITLaMP.pdf

Feel free to contact me for more info. Since these
courses are "hands-on," space is limited in each
class, so don't wait to register.
We are always looking for instructors with industry
experience and a willingness to share what they know
with others, so if this program or other open-source
topics are of interest to you, and you'd like to
help with teaching and curriculum development, let me
know.

Can you point me in the right direction on that
again? Once I get
done with my master's in July or August I want to
look into teaching
some classes at one of the community colleges around
here. You know
me, I love to talk at people. ;-)

Most of the time I've been tasked with going the
opposite direction
(from SQL Server to MySQL), but I'm moving my

from a dedicated

(I

just wasn't using
the dedicated server nearly to its potential) so

I'm

moving from
MySQL to SQL Server. MS of course has a handy
article helping with
this migration, but the principles actually apply

you're going the
other direction as well.

Bottom line is that using the ODBC connection for MySQL and SQL Server's DTS capabilities are the simplest way to

do

this because the
drivers handle a lot of the datatype mappings for
you. All I had to
do when I just moved my database was tweak some
varchar field lengths
it read incorrectly and add the primary key after
the import was
complete.

Just thought I'd pass this along since we'd been
discussing MySQL
recently.
