Not all preformance by Dj's is illegal. Theres an end-user liscense agreement that comes with the purchase of almost any techno vinyl that states basically that a dj can play it live, but can't distribute copies of the track mixed or not, for profit or not, without express permission from the owners of the track. this is why some of those moonshine mixes only have moonshine tracks on them... and why we get fully liscensed mixes ala hard dance sessions volume 1. While in the long run it may or may not be in the better interest of labels to allow copying of their materials without permission, the choice is really up to them. Personally, I wouldnt have a problem letting friend use the track in a mix and selling it so long as I got partial credit and maybe a cut of the profits, but if someone didn't even ask me and was selling hundreds of copies.. I think I'd get a bit miffed. The authority lies within the labels, their product, their copyright, their rules.
