Cannabinoids are actually neuro-receptors in the brain. It's pretty amazing how we have receptors for cannabis properties, hence marijunana has no neurotoxic effects like amphetamines or alcohol would induce. That's how I understand it. The actual scientists on the list can tell me if I'm wrong.
