Pretty low traffic on the list, so I bring up an OT thread that may
interest those of you who spend parts of your days in front of a TV.

After some research, we decided it's time to buy an large (>27") HDTV.
But like all electronics nowadays, it's at best a medium term
investment. So we went against buying a product from my employer and
instead picked a unheard-of brand Syntax (it's presumably some kind of
TW/China joint venture) based on price, specs and online customer
reviews.

Only six weeks of satisfaction later (i.e. this morning), the TV
malfunctioned. The cause is most likely a powerline surge (you may
not know about the freaky wind storm ravaging NYC today). The picture
is still watchable, but the colors are off and many of the controls
are screwed (can't adjust brightness/contrast etc). You can imagine I
was royally pissed and partially regret the choice of an upstart
brand. (who knows if a Sony or Toshiba or Philips could survive that
power spike)

Upon checking for tech support phone number, my wife complaint that I
didn't send in the registration card. Supposingly it must be sent in
within a month to activate tech support. But anyway she called the
toll free number and got put on hold for a while and ended up leaving
a voicemail. In the afternoon, I got a few mins of free time and try
the toll free myself. I managed to convince the operator to stay on
the line and wait instead of leaving a voicemail, 40 minutes of muzak
later I got a human tech support guy on the line. And less than 10
minutes after that, he promised to ship me a replacement TV. No
bullshits like you should have sent in the registration card, or try
turning off the TV try this try that or blame the customer SOP.

So... so far customer service is better than I expect, certainly
better than the norm for major consumer electronic brands. Will
update when the actual replacement arrives.

PS: I complained here that ADVfilms.com had backordered the Genesis
Climber Mospeada boxset I paid for months ago. Well the box arrived
during the New Year so I am cool with that now. Still the e-tail arm
of ADV could improve their operations and give a more professional
presentation.
