Depends on your definition of "behind", most non-otaku on this side of
the pond will point out atht a humanoid robot (like the Honda Asimo)
is cute but not very practical in a fight.  Japanese make robot geisha
and line dancers, Americans make automobiles that cross desert and
cruise missles.

In the US/UK side, the emphasis is on mass, power and speed, or
specialization (vertical jumps, or swimming, etc).  Any of the
entrants from Robot War can make mincemeat out of Gundams and
Mazingers in either Robot War rules or the Japanese robot sumo(?)
rules.  But armed RC car and one-trick ponies is just not interesting
enough for Japanese, is it?  Damn amazing.


Well, consider Japan's research are more academic and US/UK is more DoD/MoD money, you should expect that.
