Looks like I have to recant my statements about the XBox360 DVD playback problems.
It looks like it performs decently. However, he does note that resolution is limited to 480p (only if you have special cables). This sucks since Microsoft is pushing it's 720p and 1080i capabilities for games.

While it would probably make an impact, I don't think it would be quite that dramatic. The simple fact that Gundam games typically have something lacking means that there's an awful lot of people playing who don't really care what happens to them - particularly in the US (which, while not the initial market for most JP console games, is still pretty important). And for Sony, the 'killer app' that pulled people to the Playstation was Final Fantasy VII. Square-Enix has taken a lot of well-deserved flack for their more recent Final Fantasy games (though I personally enjoy FFXI), but the Final Fantasy series is still popular enough that the running joke when the FFXII demo was released was that you could get Dragon Quest VIII for free when you purchased the demo (the demo was bundled with DQ8). I've heard from a friend living in Japan that FFXII got an amazingly good review in one of the Japanese magazines (something Famicon, iirc - I can barely remember the names of the US console magazines, let alone the Japanese ones), although he doesn't know if it was a genuine review or just the magazine involved sucking up to Squenix. If the review marks are honest, then it might renew fan loyalty in the brand (which while still very strong, isn't what it once was).
Regardless, unless Final Fantasy XIII (and you know it's coming) is announced for a system other than Sony's, the PS3 will at least get an initial lease on life. And I haven't heard anything to suggest that Square-Enix is contemplating taking the series away from the Playstation.
Though speaking of Final Fantasy and X-Box - the upcoming FFXI expansion (due out later this month) will also premier FFXI on the X-Box 360. This isn't the first console system that the game has been playable on, though. It was available on the PS2 at release, and I wouldn't be surprised if Square-Enix plans on releasing an updated PS3 version.
