Data was pitiful because he was obsessed with becoming human (or human-like), 
which utterly defeats the purpose of AI in the first place. The Borg were just 
stupid, since anything keen on adapting in the manner they did wouldn't need 
humanoid agents to do the deed. An out of control, mechanized race bent on 
improving itself is a fine idea (and one that's been explored many, many 
times), but I'm going for something different here. The AIs in question are 
content with who and what they are, know exactly what they're doing, and are 
not malfunctioning in the least. They just understand the implications of their 
programming better than do their creators (or, perhaps, simply learned to apply 
their programming in new ways that are consistent with their old programming 
and still ultimately benevolent toward humanity, even if humanity needs to grow 
the f--- up).
