Tomino wrote Loran in a way that's opposite to all his UC counterparts, esp.
against Amuro, that Loran is even more gentle and maintain himself
throughout the whole series... doesn't change into a good soldier (Amuro),
doesn't get driven nuts (Camille), yet he makes the biggest archivement even
comparing to the most powerful Newtype, saving the once-again wipeout of
civilization.

Yet, Loran is still a total dork. :-) Come to think of it, Loran is most
like Shinji in Evangelion -- passive, even downright weak in character at
some point. But Loran remains positive and react with, hmm, "the wrath of
righteousness" and save the world. Shinji however is useless from top to
bottom and while kids would more identify with him, makes the character
department of Eva kinda meaningless.

I wouldn't say Loran is like Shinji at all. Loran might seem passive, but
he is always more focused on others needs more than his own. Shinji, on the
other hand, is only concerned with himself. Thus you have total
selflessness vs. total selfishness. Loran may make a few mistakes, but I
can't remember any that are caused by him having his head up his @ss
brooding and whining like Shinji. The only similarity that I seem between
the two is a total lack of ego. Loran may be subservient, but not because
he hates himself like Shinji.

And back on the topic of a spoilerish nature

The more I think about it the more I think that Loran and Dianna definitely
do share a romantic connection. It isn't necessarily as carnal as Kiel and
Harry, but I think she genuinely did fall in love with him during her time
on Earth. The scene where they were dancing together did seem somewhat
flirtatious. Up until she left with Midgard, she seemed very attracted to
Loran. I think that the only reason she seemed different after Midgard took
her was because she was so focused on saving her people. Also if Loran was
only living with her platonically as a servant there would've been no need
for him to say farewell to Sochie. Also it is interesting to note that
Dianna had a ring, but Loran didn't have one on. Maybe they were just
engaged at the time shown. That would explain them living in separate
rooms. In my view of the future of the characters they are passionately in
love and popping kids out.
