Actually:

The 20% price cut was announced for the Japanese version, I'd expect
the same % discount worldwide.

There's no question that the price is "reasonable" given the component
costs. The big debate has always been if PS2 can deliver double the
amount of fun as Wii or the Xbox360.

Originally I was planning to get a PS3 as my Blu-ray player, but now
I'm not nearly as enthusaistic about HD movies as before, so PS3 (much
less Xbox360 + HDDVD drive) is currently off the table for me. OTOH,
both wife and I are pretty sold on the idea of a Wii. Especially if
there's some kiddie game for Cui Ying. PS2 + Eyetoy is proving "not
bad" for a 2 yr old.

It's a lot, but keep in mind the PS3 is essentially a computer, and a
pretty high end one at that, as the G70 GPU is pretty much one of the
newest GPUs out there, although it has since been surpassed by the
7900 series and will again be surpassed by the 8800 series. It's still
a very high end core. The CPU I can't say much about since I don't
know anything about it. It's 3.2GHz but that doesn't mean much. But my
point is that $600 for what's basically a high end gaming computer is
not bad at all.
