imo, the second game is more difficult, and starts throwing the harder fights at you sooner. As in the first game there are quite a few boss fights that involve getting a target mecha's health down by a certain percentage, at which point it flees the battlefield. However, unlike the first game, the ????? value (which represents more than 99,999 hp) shows up quite frequently (iirc, in the first game it only appeared on a couple of enemy mecha very, very late in the game), and nearly every boss has the HP regen ability. I had one fight where I had to knock 75,000 hp (out of what turned out to be 150,000) off of an enemy boss mecha in order to get it to retreat, and the enemy unit healed back to full health every turn in which I failed to get it down low enough.
There's also the occasional item that appears to be an accidental mistake on the part of the game creators. For example, Excellen, who pilots a light mecha that depends on its high agility to avoid getting hit, has the defensive support ability, which allows her to shield a teammate and take damage instead of them. I've seen people speculate that this was an error, and she was supposed to have the offensive support ability, which would have allowed her to attack at the same time as a character next to her (which, incidentally, she had in the first game).
There are nods to other series. One blond character from the first game who was a seeming villain fighting for noble ideals reappears in this game 'disguised' with sunglasses, and insisting that he's someone else (even though everyone recognizes him). At another point, there's a conversation between characters about assigning a nickname to one individual, with the nickname coming dangerously close to one that they would 'get in trouble for' using - i.e. the same nickname used by a well-known character in an animated mecha series, which the OG games don't license.
Overall, the game is a lot of fun and well worth the investment if you liked the first one. Just be aware that if you found the first game difficult, you might have issues with the second.
