So I figured out how to load Japanese region games with the modchip,
took some googling :P
I've only played the three "Trial" stages (tutorials) and one real
level. Since it's already 6 months old I won't bother with writing a
review or guide. Anyone who wants it, have it already. Everyone else
is probably not interested.
I just want to say it's FUN to play. Which is... yes for me the first
time for Gundam games. Why? Well the control is a little gimmicky,
but it works. It's nowhere as "true-feel" as Wii Sports, but it's not
distracting. I think the game actually could work equally well on a
conventional PS2/GC controller. So what makes this game fun is not the
Wii control scheme.
I think a major factor is that it takes itself so lightly, and it
dares to diverge from Gundam's conventional wisdoms. To start with,
there's only one single weapon type: hammers. No beam weapons, and
beam sabres! The opening cut scene even make a big self-reference
over that. You can only unlock a total of 6 suits (3 of them looks
almost identical: Gundam, Mag. Coating Gundam and G-3) and there are
only 14 types of upgrade parts to pick up. By throwing away the huge
range of MS, weapons and upgrades, SDGSH focus on what's fun: smashing
enemies and stuffs and play out a very funny version of the TV series.
Completely unlike the G-Gen strategy games, the story in SDGSH is very
easy to follow (assuming you are familiar with 0079). And unlike the
FvZ series of "sims", this retelling of the storyline is actually
enjoyable and often LOL funny. And if one knows Japanese, it's even
possible to enjoy this game without knowing Gundam.
But for non-Japanese, I think you have to be a 0079 fan to follow the
storyline and figure out that, e.g., Char is playing Garma.
Bottomline: early impression is a thumbs-up.
Anyway, back to the game. I want to see if they play out the Seattle
King Dome scene.
