Most lists historically were only ASCII (HTML did not exist
till recently). Asking somebody to prove the negative
is a very interesting tactic -- it is proponents of HTML
that should do the survey since they are the persons who are
requesting a change.
I ban HTML (or any attachments for that matter) on some lists
that I administer. Have not come across any email so far,
in which the properties of HTML are used in any meaningful
way. On the other hand, seen quite a lot of posts that are
made by people, who send out HTML email because their machine
came configured that way.
