I forwarded the recent exchange between Mike Roberts and Michael
Sondow to some friends and acquaintances, some of whom are long-time
Internet professionals and others who are not. This is a response
from a non-Internet professional who's been using the Internet for a
relatively short time.

This is really interesting. I had to spend a couple of hours
looking into ICANN it's policies and objectives. So do you want an
opinion? From what little I have read and looked into I can see why
there is so much concern about ICANN. And what is even more frightening
is that it looks like the government is not easing out of the internet
governance business but rather willing to flat turn it over with a lot
of unanswered questions and policies. Is there such a thing as an open
forum with this issue?
I don't think so and can see that the only way to move from airing your
views and being taken into consideration will be through a courtroom.
I personally think it important that those who have been involved
in the "birth and childhood" of the internet be very involved in this
transfer. The parents and caregivers will not let the original intent
be lost. But has the internet become what it's creators had in mind?
I could ask a whole lot of questions on the whole issue, but in
reality I don't have a clue. However I can see how you could spend
hours on this. So what is your feelings on the subject?
