I'm not as polished as I am clean-shaven. I wanted to grow a beard,
but my wife made me scrape it all off today.

Seriously, though - think about the position we're all in. When a group
like ICANN has closed meetings, it's a bad thing, as they are
presumably invested with the power to enact policy. That is a very
clear point.

But when another group holds closed meetings, there's not much
that can be done about it. In the case of dnso.org, and in this case,
there are 2 actions one must choose from - first, participate in
those closed meetings, or second, decline to participate and see
what happens. Interestingly, one can often do both.

If, as one might hope, the end result is a DNSO that is open
and transparent in its actions once it has the power to enact
policy (or, at a minimum, the power to make authoritative
recommendations to ICANN) then we win. If, on the other
hand, it is a closed group once it receives its mandate, then
we're no longer in a situation of a closed-gathering, but into
the first situation of a closed group-with-power. As I said,
that's different, as I see it.

But remember well - no matter how the group is created,
and no matter how the group operates, one thing remains
true, always: if the group enacts policy or undertakes
actions that are harmful and/or illegal, there is always the
remedy of the courts. I have no doubt that this point is
not lost on anyone involved. This, if nothing else, puts a
minimum level of fairness on this whole process.

Now...

Who's going to be in Washington to have dinner and
drinks with on Saturday evening? Who lives there that
can handle logistics (e.g. reservations)?

Christopher
