Yes! Perhaps one way to think of this is imagining increasing the numbers
of at-large board members ***should the number of SO's go beyond three,*** to
keep a sort of parity between the number of SO-derived members and the
at-large ones. Of course, the problem of representation is difficult
enough that it's not clear twenty, say, could do the job any better than
nine. Getting at the other powers of membership--say, a vote among the
membership, not just the at-large directors, needed to amend the articles
of incorporation--may help here.
COOK: my insertion of ***. But I note that ICANN Praesidium Chairman
Esther Dyson said not so long ago something like **for the moment** ICANN
did not envision additional supporting organizations. Don't bet that ICANN
will content itself with trying to regulate ONLY ip numbers, port number
assignments and dns/root servers. Esther had herself a laundry list of
items that she was attracted to. Someone should check with ICANN General
Secretary Roberts to see what new areas he has in mind for this million
dollar a year grandiose bureacracy to invade.
These new "leaders" have gotten quite quiet as of late. Is the IETF ready
to incorporate and pledge fealty to Mike and Esther in order to collect its
3 PSO board seats? How long before Roberts floats the ITU as the
alternative PSO?
