You are right, in principle, but the problem comes often from the unhealthy
habit of some people who copy every message to each and every list they
subscribe to, relevant or not to the thread.
The problem is then generated by subsequent replies "to all" (BTW, I
personally believe that it is normal courtesy to include in the reply all
the recipients of the original message).
It is true, though, that normally the list managers do not show the patience
and good will that Richard shows in forwarding the bouncing messages. I,
personally, welcome his efforts.
