I'm sure the Red Cross does some good work. However, it may be of
interest to list members to know that the U.S. Government, when
asked after WWII why the US Air Force hadn't bombed the nazi
concentration camps, where nine million defenseless, unarmed, and
innocent civilians were brutally murdered, cited among other things
a 1943 report by the Red Cross which said that it had visited
Auschwitz but had seen nothing wrong there. The nazis were of course
forewarned of the Red Cross's intended visit and had carefully
prepared a special sector of the camp for them to see where all
appeared quite normal. In short, the Red Cross was duped.
Nevertheless, anyone with the slightest intelligence should have
realized that the nazis would try to put one over on the inspectors
and should have demanded to see the rest of the camp, including the
buildings where that strange and acrid black smoke was continuously
rising from the chimneys. The Red Cross never did request any such
thing, and then told the world that it was satisfied the nazi camps
were in as good order as could be expected under the circumstances
(the war).
More recent stories, about the sale of Red Cross supplies on the
black market in Croatia, Kossovo, and elsewhere, leave an equally
unpleasant taste in the mouth.
