Depending on how the router is working for you, you may want to consider a linux-based NAS. I have (several) ReadyNAS units and I have found them to be exceptional units. I have dd-wrt installed on my Linksys wrt-54g router, so I am limited on what I can run. I have DNS (bind), Apache, SSH, along with all the file serving protocols like NFS.
I believe it's based off Debian, so development should be easy. There is a moderately active community too. I have one of the slower sparc systems, which is cheaper but kinda limits the speed.
