I use GoLUG's IRC every day. It's much easier to get going than email -- all you do is install xchat and remember "freenode" and #golug. When building my OpenBSD/pf firewall (http://www.troubleshooters.com/linux/pf/index.htm), long before I could get email or even a gui browser up, I BSD package installed the irssi CLI IRC client, and bang, I could talk to my buds right on the BSD box. If your LUG gets a critical mass of intelligent people on your IRC channel, it will become a great resource.
