Hello all. I wanted to send out a note to say goodbye to the folks in
JaxLUG. I'll be leaving the area in a few weeks to attend a PhD program
in computer science at Syracuse University in Syracuse, NY. My area of
research will be in networking theory and distributed systems. Since my
professional experience and academic research has been in applied embedded
systems and OS theory, I am hoping this will be a good subject domain for
me to continue researching and publishing in. I will also be teaching
undergraduate coursework in networking and OS theory, and I am looking
forward to helping the next generation of computer science students find
out how much fun this kind of work can be. Or I might just be really
frustrated with how the kids don't care about it all that much. It could
go either way, I suppose.
I've been on the mailing list with the LUG for a number of years, though I
have only attended meetings on the four occasions that I made
presentations to the LUG. I've interacted with a number of LUG members
via offlist mails many times, and it has been a pleasure bouncing ideas
back and forth, helping with technical issues, and even hiring and working
professionally with a few of you. You're a good group of technical-minded
folks, and I wish you all the best in the future.
I will continue to lurk on the mailing list, since I enjoy reading about
the hobby projects and odd problems that we discuss every now and then.
So, I guess I am not going to be "gone" per se, since I will still be
keeping an ear out for whatever might be happening with the LUG.
Take care, everyone. Keep on learning and tinkering, and make the most
out of all that available software out there. I wish a fraction of the
source code, documentation, and open coursework available today was
available 20 years ago!
Andrew
