You ought to read that article in CFDJ "What's AJAX?".  It'll answer
your question in detail, but here's the short answer.

AJAX is short for Asynchronous JavaScript and XML.  It user the
JavaScript XMLHttpRequest function to create a tunnel from the
client's browser to the server and transmit information back and forth
without having to refresh the page.

As opposed to IFRAME where the inline frame is actually refreshed.
