Fry's has a demo machine setup with an Athlon 64 X2 setup that is running dual GeForce 7800 GTX 512 MB. WOW!!! That thing is freakin' sweet on framerates.
I agree with the group the performance is about the same but whatever you get... If you really want to the best gaming performance (and budget allows) go for a system based on the Nvidia SLI chipset. It has 2 PCIx 16s and is capable of bridging the graphics cards together to function as one. But $1000 per gfx card???? That is kinda steep. The things they are finally getting sued by AMD over now. I long ago decided I was never buying an Intel unless AMD screwed me over and I've been much happier for it. They cost a lot less usually and perform really well all around. Try and find a gamer that doesn't use AMD instead of Intel (there aren't that many). Anyway, from a little more intelligent standpoint, I would suggest having a look at hardocp.com for some real benchmarking on how things are comparitively.
