Matt,
I would be interested also - how to migrate to a Flex front end as a topic.
Maybe even cover this over a couple of months as a series to let us get
familiar with Flex.

As an aside, I'm going to some Flex training at Adobe in San Jose in a
couple of weeks--I'm assuming Flex would be a good future meeting topic
people woudl be interested in? Just thought I'd get the level of interest
on that.

Derek,
I recommend loading the equivalent of a session variable into the Flex
app and including that in all requests to the server. The server
could then use the Flex session variable for authentication and
identification purposes.
Guid's work pretty well for this type of operation and can be stored
in an application variable or object to minimize database hits.
This approach allows you to keep the security risks low and still
provide the same session like capabilities in your Flex application.

A sample would be great.. I'm trying to build (for this experiment) a
Flex interface to an existing CF app. I want to be able to call all
the same CFC's (or wrapper CFC's) to handle authentication..CFLOGIN
etc.. and to load up all the vars, roles, etc Usually, in the CF app,
I load up some id's etc into SESSION.. of course this data is still
secured on the server.. but in the case of FLEX, I guess I need to
send that data to the FLEX app.. is that still secure?
Maybe since doing all this stateless development.. I forgot how to do
client-server apps.. ack..

if you want I can create a sample that does this. you really dont need
a session as flex apps are stateful. just load in their id into the
app and then you are good to go. If you want to time out the app, you
can use a time in AS to do this.

Now that Flex 2 is out, I've been experimenting with it and can't seem
to find a good way to handle a login page and someway to mimick a
session..
Any thoughts?

As with most Flash Player releases the upgrade's pretty painless so I
typically don't have any qualms requiring the latest download. The
big, big advantage of Flash Player 9 is how extremely fast it is for
Flex 2 apps because it includes a lot of the Flex runtime stuff right
in the player itself. General overall speed is also much faster
because of the new virtual machine architecture. We won't see much in
the way of speed benfeits (other than the general player speed
benefits) in CF 7 Flash Forms because they're based on Flex 1.5 so
those runtimes are included in the Flash Player from what I
understand.
I've been running the beta for quite a while and the only problems
I've seen is when sites are looking for flash player 6, 7, or 8
specifically (as opposed to just > 6 or something like that), but I
haven't seen any problems with existing Flash bits working in FP 9.
Hope that helps--if you have any specific questions I can always
float them by the Adobe lists and see if anyone can share any info.
