This problem is compounded by the fact that you can't really tell if the
extra space indicates a two-word first name or a two-word last name (e.g.,
"Mary Ann Trempert" or "Oscar de Gutierrez").

To expand the quick-and-dirty solution with a little more, er, quick dirt:

Consider checking the string for more than two spaces.  If you get a
positive result (i.e., listlen(YourString, " ") GT 2 --i think that works),
have it choose a default action (e.g., always assume that the extra space
indicates a two-word first name), then set a flag on it (e.g., cfmail you an
alert asking you to eyeball the worrisome entry).

Depending on what you are doing with the data once parsed (or how
standardized the input is), you might have to do the same thing with any
string that has LT 2 spaces.
