Dylan,

We use cfdocument to create a quite a few different PDFs. Most of them
are pretty small, with a few getting up in the 20-page range. The
performance has been good enough for our usage. Keep in mind,
cfdocument is single-threaded in ColdFusion Standard Edition, so you
might need Enterprise for a high volume of PDFs.

A couple of performance tips from my experiences:

1) don't do a lot of CF processing within the cfdocument tags; instead,
save the data into a variable using cfsavecontent before the cfdocument
tags

2) don't stream the PDF directly to the browser, use the filename
attribute to save it to disk first

We've experienced a couple of annoying display issues. If anyone has
any tips for these problems I'd like to hear about them.

1) A small percentage of time the images don't display in the generated
PDFs over https. We've had the best luck when specifying the image
source like this: <img src="file:///

2) A small percentage of time CF decides to increase the scale on a page
causing it to wrap into multiple pages.

Subject: [DFW CFUG] cfdocument/ report builder

Hi all.

I'm about to be forced down the dark alley of XMPie and am trying to
find an alternative for our PDF generation. cfdocument doesn't seem
reliable enough for larger PDFs and (I'm told) suffers from formatting
and server performance issues. Have any of you created large documents
successfully using this tag?

Alternatively, have any of you used CF ReportBuilder to generate large
PDFs? Were you happy with the results?

Thanks.
