Rob thank you that did work. I don't have any documentations on CFMX 7 at the 
moment except for what I googled and what I did google were very vague.

Where did you pull this info from?

Since the text property of an input field is a string (you can check this using 
if(firstName.text instanceof String) Alert("true");) you can use the Flex 
String object methods. Try doing firstName.text.substr(0, 1) and 
lastName.text.substr(0, 7).
