I'm definitely looking forward to hearing about <cfthread/> (and this
months meeting)!
The only asynchronous stuff I've done has been via the XMLHttpRequest
object. With that, you indeed lob it over the fence, but you also expect
it to report back with either a success/failure message, or actual data,
right? I've not used event gateways with CF before (if that's what
you're referring to) which is why I'm interested in hearing what other
folks think about Daniel's find. I could be wrong, this could be the
coolest thing since soup in a cup. :o)
So what about my questions (both with this technique and with
asynchronous gateways)? Can you ever have that child process return data
to the main application? Maybe I need to read up more on CF gateways,
but I guess maybe I was thinking about this in the same way that I think
about using deprecated code. Sure it works now, but in the future this
undocumented "feature" may go away, and you'd be stuck with application
code that doesn't work.
Does that sound like a valid argument?

Isn't that basically how asynchronous gateways are handled though,
Chris? In essence you kind of just lob it over the fence and hope it
does its thing. You can of course build pieces into your application
to check the success/failure downstream and take whatever action
need. It sounds, however, that you will be interested in hearing the
<cfthread/> discussion by Josh next week!

Hmm.... I'd never heard of that before, and while it sounds cool,
it also sounds a bit flaky. Do you ever get control of that child
process again, or does it just go off into never-never land?
Meaning, if there's ever an error with that child process, will
you ever be notified? Can you ever have that child process return
data to the main application? I don't think I would use it, but
I'm interested in the opinion of some of the more experienced
guru's out there. :o)
Cheers,

It appears that CFHTTP can be used to send off a request asynchronously by
setting the timeout value to 1 sec. CF will return connection time data to
the parent page but the child request will still run up until the CF admin
timeout value.
The question: Am I crazy for building on top of such a "feature"? Anyone
used this before?
