I am obviously not explaining this well, so let me give a better description
of my environment.

I have Eclipse installed in a place where most of my applications reside.
In my case that is /home/dshuck/apps/eclipse. In Windows that would be like
c:\program files\eclipse.

My workspace resides in /home/dshuck/workspace. In Windows this would be
like c:\Documents and Settings\dshuck\My Documents. This is where settings
about your environment are saved. Think of it as the "registry" for
eclipse, since eclipse doesn't use that messy windows registry stuff. :)

My actually files are various places, either on a mounted (mapped) location
to a server, or in my local webroot in /usr/local/apache2/htdocs (or some
symbolically linked folder). Those are defined in Eclipse by setting up
projects, the definitions of which are stored in the workspace.

Does that explain the separation better?

the workspace just keeps a reference of settings and paths, not the
files them selves.
