this reads an XML file.
the names don't change often so I set up the backend to write an new
xml file when a change takes place in the db.

As for your questions, yes, you can put a Flex app 'in' a page. I do
this in several sites I have worked on.

#2, no I have not seen any Flex shopping carts but it would be fairly
easy to implement.
