I have simulated an environment using two workstations. I was able to checkout projects and make changes and merge conflicting changes. Works great. I ran the demonstration with the boss and a co-worker watching. The co-worker with an antagonistic look in his face asked me why I was able to open the same file with both workstations as if he didn't understand what I just did; he then added we should NOT be able to check out the same file to prevent overwriting each other's code. The boss agreed with him. I had to explain to both that what they just witnessed was in fact one of the benefits like you just said Dave of SVN.
