Hi folks, I'm getting involved in a new open source project called cfCommerce ( http://cfCommerce.org) and soon (hopefully) we'll be starting the design of the object model. I've not done this before alone or with a group let alone with a group over the internet. As far as this step is concerned, I'm constantly reminded of something that Dave said during his OOP preso a couple of months ago. He talked about finding the "nouns" in the project. Is this the bulk of what developing the object model is about? Determining the things or the "nouns" in the project (in our case probably something like: cart, catalog, order, payment gateway, etc.) and then fleshing out what those things do as well as what they know about themselves?
Also along those lines, does one typically use a UML editor to layout the object model? I read an article that talked about getting all of the developers in a room and using index cards; one each to represent the different objects. This seems impractical to do over the web. Is it enough to just have a mailing list thread on the subject and then put all the stuff into an organized UML format later? And lastly (for now anyway... lol!) can anyone recommend a good (hopefully free or open source) UML editor? I looked around a bit, but wasn't sure if maybe I should find something that plugs into eclipse or if a stand alone product would be better. I'll keep looking, but if anyone can suggest something to me that'd be great. Thanks heaps. Chris -- http://cjordan.us
