Hi there, I have a problem getting WAN failover to work. One wrinkle compared to all the other descriptions I've seen is that the WAN connections are using the same NIC, but are on different VLANS. (I know that's not exactly the recommended way of doing failover, but you gotta do what you can).
To start with, I read through a bunch of other peoples howto's, with this one being the one that seemed simplest/most up to date: http://www.bunkerhollow.com/blogs/matt/archive/2011/07/27/pfsense-2-0-multi-wan-failover-with-clear-wireless-internet.aspx In my case, both WAN connections are using dynamic DHCP addresses, so the 2 default dynamic gateways are used. The first problem I ran into is that I can't remove the "default gateway" flag from these automatically generated gateways. After a bunch of poking around, I found out that by changing the "Monitor IP" on the gateway, I am allowed to remove the flag as well. Is that safe? ie, will an IP address change on the interface still reconfigure the gateway (keeping the Monitor IP and flag status)? Second problem was that when the primary WAN connection went down, the pfSense UI got slower than anything. Third problem ... the failover never even worked! Any ideas or recommendations?
