It's not really overkill if you consider snort and consorts. There are
plenty of great packages, some of them more expensive in terms of
CPU and storage I/O (I use small SSDs anyway) than others.

I'm lucky to have access to cellar, where the heating burner is loud enough
to drown fan noise.

I put all my rackmount stuff and loose ends (G4 Mac mini, UPS,
random external drives etc.) including patch panel and switch into 
a cheap wall-mount rack, and added two fans I had laying around so 
that ventilation is adequate.

WiFi technology progresses far quicker than firewall/WAN speed (802.11n is
at 450 MBit/s already), so you're likely to exchange WiFI APs more often than 
changing your core firewall. Adding multiple APs (I use bridge mode) will
typically improve coverage.

It is also worthwhile to donate directly to the project. I try to donate
50 EUR for any pfSence instance I have in operaton. I will do so again
when 2.1 with full IPv6 support comes out.
