To add to the fun, I just configured and confirmed that L2TP+IPsec does in fact work with Android 4.1.1 against pfSense. I'll work on a write-up for the wiki, but it's really not that hard to do.
The key thing that the Android L2TP+IPsec client allows that others do not is the ability to set the identifier used by the client. Most others assume the IP address and won't let you change it.
