Realizing I'm not answering the OP's question, I'll add that I took a two-stage approach to the upgrade that was rather successful:

 1. I used the web interface's firmware update widget to do an
    in-place upgrade. Upon completion, I backed up the configuration
    including all RRD information.

 2. I reformatted the local (mirrored) disks, did a clean install,
    then restored the backed-up configuration, RRD and all.

That did the trick for me. I was able to take advantage of the update facility and get a fresh installation. All my RRD graphs have valid historical information.

I still can't get pfSense to recognize the two-port Intel i350 NIC, but that's a different problem (and may be hardware-related).
