That doesn't mean much, the newer base/drivers could be enabling features on the NICs that require more resources. It's not the first time that's happened. Do you see any errors in the boot log (/var/log/dmesg.boot) or on the console when it starts up with all of the NICs present? What does "netstat -m" show? "netstat -mb"? Is this bare metal hardware or a virtualized system? Describe the hardware/hypervisor in more detail.
