Fellows and Fellow Travelers:
We have two great opportunities to see theater this week and I need you to
RSVP to me as soon as possible:
(1) On Wednesday night, June 6, I'm going to take the group to Pillsbury
House Theater to see Rha Goddess in her one woman show, "Low." It has been
very favorably reviewed in both the Minneapolis STAR TRIBUNE and the St. Paul
PIONEER PRESS (you can hit each newspaper's website and search for "Low"), and
there is interesting background information about Rha Goddess as writer,
performer, and theater activist, if you google her name. The show is at
7:30pm, so we'd leave around 6:45pm.
(2) On Friday afternoon, June 8, at 3pm, Macalester graduate (class of
'01) Danai Gurira will stage her two-woman, award-winning show, "In the
Continuum," at the Guthrie Theater as part of the national Theater
Communications Guild conference. Danai, a Zimbabwean who has lived most of her
life in the US, majored in Psychology at Macalester, though she appeared in
several mainstage productions and developed solo work at Macalester and in
workshops at Penumbra. She then moved to NYC and earned an MFA in Acting at
NYU, where she co-wrote "In the Continuum" with Nikole Salter (they perform it
together). Both actors perform multiple characters in this play which explores
the situations and experiences of African and African American women facing the
challenges posed by AIDS. The play has been staged successfully in New York
City, Los Angeles, and Washington, D.C., and it will be produced in Chicago
later this summer. It will be performed ONCE at the Guthrie and it is NOT open
to the public, but we have managed to gain access to it. I am also hoping that
we can meet with Danai after the show. Please google her name to find more
information about the play and about her work as a producer of knowledge and
art.
I need to confirm the number of tickets we will need for each of these
shows quickly, preferably by the late afternoon on Monday, so please RSVP to me
as soon as you get this and look over your calendar. These activities are open
to fellow travelers as well as MMUF fellows.
Thanks,
Peter
