Fellows and Fellow Travelers:

Our focus this week, as you know, is Picasso. We will meet on W morning, 10am to noon, with Professor Ruthann Godollei, chairperson of the Art Department. We will meet in Art 111 (unless you hear otherwise), rather than in our usual seminar space. Please prepare the following readings, which you should have in hand: Simon Gikandi, "Picasso, Africa, and the Schemata of Difference," MODERNISM//modernity/, volume ten, number three (2003), pp. 455-480; Seth Moglen, "Modernism in the Black Diaspora: Langston Hughes and the Broken Cubes of Picasso," CALLALOO, 25:4 (2002), pp. 1189-1205 Dennis Duerden, "The 'Discovery' of the African Mask," RESEARCH IN AFRICAN LITERATURES 31:4 (Winter 2000) Robin D.G. Kelley, "Keepin' It (Sur)real: Dreams of the Marvelous," in FREEDOM DREAMS: THE BLACK RADICAL IMAGINATION (Boston: Beacon Press, 2002). I think the Moglen article is especially smart and connects this visual art very nicely with the discussions we have been having this summer.

We will also be taking a guided tour of the Picasso exhibit at the Walker Art Center on Thursday evening at 6PM. We'll meet in the parking lot at 5:30PM. Freda Fair is arranging the tour for us. Guests are welcome to join us on the tour.
  Love and Solidarity, Peter
