WHAT IS IT?
Learn about an exciting new organizing initiative that transforms individual
acts of sending money to family members into a global movement for economic
justice. The Somali Action Alliance and the United Steelworkers Associate
Member Program, in partnership with TIGRA, are convening a campaign
orientation and briefing for groups and individuals interested in joining
this exciting global campaign.

"Remittances: The Next Frontier for Economic Justice"
Remittances Phenomena: The Economic Power of the Displaced
Globalization has transformed the lives of hundreds of millions of people in
this generation. Countless individuals have moved from villages to towns,
from cities to countries in search of ways to provide for their families and
escape the grip of poverty, violence, and an uncertain future. Many have
come to the United States, accounting for the largest influx of immigrants
since the turn of the last century, and creating an unprecedented level of
money transfer from the global North to the South, projected at $260 billion
in 2006, as these workers send money home to their families. Sending a
remittance is an individual act of love from the sender to the receiver. But
if seen as a collective practice, it can be transformed into economic power
that can be of service to family and community.
The Transnational Institute for Grassroots Research and Action (TIGRA) is a
project that promotes financial justice through the economic power of
immigrants--those who send billions of dollars to families left behind in
their countries of origin. In partnership with community and ethnic
associations, TIGRA is organizing Million Dollar Remitters Clubs in
immigrant neighborhoods (networked as a Remitters Association nationally)
that can advocate for "transnational community benefits agreements" (TCBA)
with industry leaders to support community reinvestment priorities. See:

The Somali Action Alliance brings together Somali individuals &
organizations who share a common interest in building an understanding of
public policy and expanding civic engagement among members of this immigrant

The United Steelworkers Associate Member Program strengthens the union by
building membership outside of the traditional collective bargaining
process, expands the union's role in society and reinforces the union's work
both in collective bargaining and in the legislative and political arenas.

Building for The Future: What Happens When We Win?
Minnesota TIGRA Consultation
August 4, 2007
On May 10th, we announced the start of the campaign on Western Union. We've
asked them to be genuine partners of immigrant communities and their
families the world over by adopting TIGRA's Transnational Community Benefits
Agreement (TCBA): lower their fees, set fair exchange rates, live up to
standards of global corporate responsibility, and commit $1/transaction to
community reinvestment. We're serious about winning this campaign, and we
want to make sure that we're prepared to win. That's why we're taking the
time to meet with groups across the country to envision how we're going to
build the Transnational Community Reinvestment Fund as our own institution
as a result of this campaign.

El Fenómeno de las Remesas: El Poder Económico de los Desplazados
La globalización a transformado las vidas de cientos de millones de personas
en esta generación. Innumerables individuos se han trasladado de aldeas a
pueblos, de ciudades a países buscando maneras para poder mantener sus
familias y escapar la pobreza, la violencia y un futuro inseguro. Muchos han
llegado a los Estados Unidos, formando parte del influjo mas grande de
inmigrantes desde el comienzo del siglo, creando un nivel sin precedencia de
envíos de dinero desde el Norte global al Sur, proyectado a $260 mil
millones D. en 2006, cuando estos trabajadores mandan dinero a sus familias.
Mandar una remesa es un acto individual de amor desde el remitente al que lo
recibe. Pero si lo vemos como una practica colectiva, se lo puede
transformar en un poder económico que se puede emplear para el beneficio de
familia y comunidad.
El Instituto Transnacional para Investigación y Acción de Base (TIGRA) es un
proyecto que promueve la justicia económica a través del poder económico de
los migrantes - esos que mandan miles de millones de dólares a sus familias
que dejaron atrás en sus países natales. En asociación con organizaciones
comunitarias y étnicas, TIGRA esta organizando Clubes Millonarios en barrios
inmigrantes (compuestos en una red nacional llamada la Asociación de
Remitentes) que pueda abogar por "acuerdos transnacionales de beneficios
comunitarios" (TCBA por sus siglas en ingles) con los lideres empresariales
para que apoyen las prioridades de inversión comunitaria.

El 10 de mayo anunciamos el comienzo de la campaña contra la Western Union.
Les hemos pedido que sean socios reales a las comunidades inmigrantes y sus
familias alrededor del mundo y que adopten el Acuerdo Transnacional de
Beneficios Comunitarios (TCBA por sus siglas en ingles) de TIGRA: que
rebajen sus tarifas, que fijen tasas de cambio justas, que mantengan normas
de responsabilidad empresarial al nivel global y que cometan $1/transacción
para inversión comunitaria. Estamos seguros que ganaremos esta campaña y
queremos asegurar que estemos preparados para ganar. Por eso nos estamos
tomando el tiempo para reunirnos con grupos a lo largo del país para
imaginar como vamos a formar el Fondo Transnacional de Inversión Comunitaria
como nuestra propia institución como resultado de esta campaña.
