The National Trust for Historic Preservation, a Washington, DC based
non-profit organization focused on preserving America's historic places, is
currently seeking applications for the African American Historic Places
Initiative Fellow. This fellowship program, supported by funding from the
Ford Foundation, will provide an opportunity to bridge the worlds of
historic preservation and African American Studies.
The African American Historic Places Initiative (AAHPI), begun in 2002, is a
program focused on building the capacity of the nation's African American
historic places. In the first phase of the program, the goal was to
determine the challenges that African American historic places faced, and to
determine in what ways the academic community could be a partner in
alleviating some of those challenges. From that first phase came the
creation of the Inventory of African American Historic Places in the U.S., a
database of approximately 9,500 historic places around the country, an
Advisory Board with representatives from the historic site and academic
communities, and a State of Affairs paper that summarized the work
undertaken during the first phase.
In the second phase of the AAHPI, the National Trust will be working
directly with African American historic sites and graduate African American
Studies programs to help develop templates both for improving the overall
capacity for African American historic sites, and for enhancing the
curricular development of African American Studies so as to include the use
of African American historic sites. The National Trust also will be
developing a web portal for the AAHPI, to provide the general public with an
opportunity not only to learn about the AAHPI, but also to offer commentary
regarding our work in preserving African American historic places.
The AAHPI Fellowship will begin in the fall of 2007, and it will have a term
corresponding to one academic year (2007-2008). It will provide an
opportunity for a graduate (Master's or PH.D) of one of the nation's African
American Studies Graduate programs to bring his or her training to bear in
the world of historic preservation. Furthermore, the Fellow will be working
to continue building on the relationship between the historic site and
academic community begun in the first phase of the AAHPI.
