September 12, 2007 Ushers Needed

BAHALA NA (Let it go) opens this Friday and we are very excited. But we need ushers to help out during the run.

/What do the ushers do/: they come 45 minutes before the show and help set up (programs, set tables, etc.), then they take tickets from our lovely audience members and welcome them into the "house", then after the show they help collect the surveys and clean up, then they go home. In the meantime they get to watch the show for free! What a deal!

If this sounds interesting to you *please call Stacey at our offices, 612-824-4804 *,and let her know which show you're available to usher. It's simple, you get to work with great people, help out a great organization and see a show for free! Thank you and we hope to see you soon.

Spanning decades from the 1920's in China to the 1990's in America, BAHALA NA tells the story of an aging Chinese woman who conjures up memories of her life in China and the Philippines, in hopes of transforming her gay grandson. Her memories, steeped in conflicts about race, ethnicity, gender, sexuality, and generational differences, open doors to the past, grip her heart, and lead her to an unexpected ending.*/

        A View From Above

                Rick Shiomi

In the old days, my mantra used to be that I had to scour the streets and Asian restaurants in search of would be actors. In Hollywood the saying is that there are no waiters, just would be actors and writers. Here I fond it harder to find Asian American actors at the eateries. But, somehow over time, Mu began to attract and develop a whole new generation of Asian American actors in Minnesota.

Our cast of Bahala Na is a great reflection of this gathering of talent. Our lead is Jeany Park who has worked on numerous Mu productions and we produced her first play Falling Flowers. She was one of those who came here with her MFA in acting from UW Madison and she has gradually begun to appear on a variety of stages from Mu to MaMa MosAic to the Guthrie. This is her final appearance with Mu (in this cycle) because she is moving to Oregon to be a company member of the Oregon Shakespeare Festival. It is both a great recognition of her talent and training, and the work she did with Mu and around the Twin Cities. If you want to catch her on stage before she leaves, come see Bahala Na!

Other regulars are Eric Sharp, Mayano Ochi, Rose Le Tran and Katie Bradley. These are some of the fast emerging actors who have joined Mu is the last few years. Eric has a BFA in acting from Millikin College and played "Bottom" in Mu's production of /A Midsummer Night's Dream/. Mayano spent a few years in the BFA acting program at the U of M and recently performed in /Circle Around The Island/. After this show she is heading to NYC. Rose played "Puck" in our/ Midsummer/ and "Victoria" in /Filipino Hearts/, which featured her memorable karaoke song at the party in Manila. Katie Bradley came to us from Gustavus Adolphus College and played "Hermia" in /Midsummer/. These actors reflect an even larger pool of talent that makes Mu a dynamic and growing presence in the Twin Cities.

Our newcomer for Bahala Na is Alex Galick who is a senior at Macalester College. In preparation for his debut performance with Mu, Alex has proven himself a talented and dedicated actor. And I know this will be a memorable debut for him.

Looking back, I feel that this is one of the most satisfying aspects of Mu's growth. It just amazes me that so many young talented theater artists are coming together around Mu.
